I am an ardent Kenyan sports fan residing in Boston, USA. I have keenly
followed the sporting developments all over the world for many years.
It is a shame that we Kenyans have never learnt what it really means to put
Up winning teams in continental and international football matches.
The Main reason and a very important aspect in any sports is management. As
insignificant as it may be to many fans and sportsmen, managing teams
and talent is a very skillful and calculated profession, key word here is
profession. In many of the developed football nations, soccer managers
are astute business people with experience, know how, and the vision to
make something out of nothing. Take for instance, the 1994 Nigerian world
cup team and Olympic team. preparations for this team began way back in
1988-89 with the under 17 team playing in the World Cup in Japan, and winning!
Various members of this squad formed the backbone of the later
Championship winning team (Kanu, Okocha, Finidi, Oliseh) .
We not only have to build Up and encourage our youth programs with long term planning and
sponsorship, but we also have to put in place people with the expertise to manage
the youth. Such rewards will later manifest themselves into championship
winning club, regional and national teams. What use would it be to Kenyan clubs taking part
in the Africa Championship and winning the $1m (Ksh80m) prize money and then not re-investing it back to the club. I can assure you that if a club in Kenya were to win such
money this would be the end of that clubs ambition and future endeavours. Our
soccer administrators are mostly small minded people with only their
interests at heart. Many of them would not even qualify to be office
boys in some of the better clubs in South Africa or North Africa, let alone
European Clubs.
Do you think that they would even be able to negotiate a market ratetransfer fee were one of our players to transfer to a European club.
A good example occurring today is the Tusker sponsorship. I am still
Not convinced that they (sponsors) have fully grasped what it means to be a
sponsor. Why is it that players are providing their own training kit
for the national team? Is there no uniformity or pride in the way our national
team presents itself. Truly our country has reached the lowest depth in
soccer management. Why do we still treat players representing us as if we were
in the age of the Gossage Cup. Wake up Kenyan Soccer! Only hard work and
well spent money translates into results. Would you blame development in
your district on the constituents if you only see your M.P. once or twice ayear. This is the end result of mistreating players. We have gone full
circle, hiring and firing players, blaming coaches etc, but we always
fail to look at our main deficiencies. Lets face it, we may have the talent
to play, but do we have the talent to manage and administrate?
